Pablo Picasso (b 1881) , Spanish expatriate, painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and stage designer, one of the greatest and most-influential artists of the 20th century and the creator (with Georges Braque) of Cubism. Unique for its volume (more than 20,000 works), for its development in time (75 years of continuous creation), its diversity of style and technique- painting, drawing, engraving and collage; sclupture and constructions; pottery and other mediums- and for its intensity, the oeuvre of Pablo Ruiz y Picasso is both "autobiographical" (as an art dealer, Daniel henry Kahnweiler termed it) and politically committed. Of fundamental aesthetic importance, it launched, exploited, and perhaps surpassed the artistic revolution of the 20th century. Like the man himself, the work is unpredictable and complex; it lives through contrasts and disguises, though its vital essence is never hidden.
